No, V-Day does not stand for Valentines Day; it was violence against women day! I went for Latinitas to do the Clothesline Project and a healing hearts tree. For those who don’t know, the clothesline project is a program to address and increase awareness to the issue of violence against women. This is done all around the world in many different ways. We asked survivors, those affected, or anyone who believes the violence has to stop to write messages to one another for encouragement on some shirts we provided. The healing hearts tree was similar, except they wrote on cut out hearts that were then put on a drawn tree. Although we didn’t get many participants, it was still nice to go and listen to these great poets who have had their share of violence in their lives and not all of it was physical. I came to learn that when people think of violence against women they think physical abuse, but really there is emotional abuse that can cause so much more damage than a hit on the face.
