Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, many of you are probably blushing at the thought of your boyfriend or a secret admirer. You have your red construction paper ready, and are composing “Roses are red…” poems in your head. Some of you are sitting at home saddened by the prospect of not having a special someone. But how many of you have considered rising up with others to end violence against women?

An organization called V-Day has created a world-wide event, called “One Billion Rising” to do just that. On February 14th, at hundreds of locations around the world (including one in Austin, TX) people will gather together to dance in solidarity for the awareness of, and end to violence against women. The statistic provided by V-day notes that “one in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime” an atrocity that through the power of dance, V-day hopes to change.

As women, as Latinas, as daughters, sisters, girlfriends, wives, children, and adults we all fit a role that is affected by violence against women. Even if you have never experienced such violence in your own life there is a good chance that you know someone who has. Regardless, this awful reality will not be eradicated until people across every nation take a stand.

The website for this event is It provides excellent information including locations services to find a rising near you, celebrity and organizational endorsement and participation, statistics on violence against women, and a comprehensive FAQ page that includes such information as why dancing is the medium through which V-Day seeks to end such violence. There are many “how-to-dance” and poetry videos for you to peruse as well as the chance to connect with women worldwide. This website is definitely worth a look, and some consideration, even if you can’t attend.

Sign up for the event online and spread the word via facebook, twitter, and tumblr. “One billion women violated is an atrocity. One billion women dancing is a revolution.” – V-Day
