Latinitas - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

I recently read an article on called "What is beauty and who has it?"

As I read the article I found it to be very interesting. The article asks, "Can beauty be defined by age, gender, color, body shape or size." And it seems that the definition of beauty is changing constantly, especially in the United States. Back in 1991 Christine Brinkley, a blonde haired, blue eyed, model was considered an "ideal beauty" but that "ideal beauty" has significantly changed. The article suggest that in a recent study 70% of the individuals interviewed wanted to be of darker skin and have curvy bodies. It also suggested that "women of mixed race represent the epitome of beauty."

While the article proved a positive message that the idea of beauty is changing to embrace all races, I couldn't help but feel a little angry towards the idea of "ideal beauty" and why must we look a certain way to be beautiful. Why must there be an "ideal beauty" as we are all beautiful in our own unique ways. And why must beauty always have to be portrayed on the outside, as whats on the inside is what matters most. I feel a certain look doesn't make you beautiful, but the person you are is what makes you beautiful. While I must admit that it is nice to look pretty with your hair and make-up done, your personality and your unique qualities that make you you are what truly defines your beauty.

It was nice however to see a quote at the end of the article which said, "But today there's a whole spectrum of women who've helmed beauty campaigns from blonde to brunette, from fair skinned to deep, including celebrities Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Freida Pinto, Eva Mendes, Taylor Swift, Kerry Washington, Aishwarya Rai, Drew Barrymore, Gwen Stefani, and models such as Liu Wen, Liya Kebede, Christy Turlington, and Adriana Lima." It is nice to see that for once all races are seen as beautiful! Hopefully in the future more Latinas will be represented in the media as real & beautiful women!
