LatinitasMagazine.org - A Strong Voice for Latina Youth

Well driving down the freeway and listening to the radio in my Jeep, I couldn't help but notice that lately music lyrics have become more and more obscene. I guess this really came as an sudden realization to me, since I always, for the most part, listen to my I-Pod. I guess I got stuck in the eighties listening primarily to The Cure and The Smiths and other bands that are not so popular anymore, (I know, I know I'm a little outdated in the whole music scene deal, sadly). However I could not help but wonder what attracted me to that type of music in the first place. My conclusion was that besides the fact that I enjoy the sounds and melodies, I also appreciate their lyrics. I realized that musical lyrics have changed drastically. I look up to bands like the The Cure, The Smiths and Joy Division because they were poetic in their choice of words and how they used them. The messages, also, were very different from what you hear nowadays in the radio. I could not help but feeling that women, for the most part, are the prime subjects of these derogatory lyrics. So I am wondering, what do you all think about lyrics nowadays? Are we, women ,victims of the lyrics? Are we being disrespected by women and men who are talking about women in their music? Let me know what you think!

That is so true Liz!! I love 80's music too not only because of the  melody nut of the lyrics too.

In general, women are objectified and sexualized but lately, music lyrics are becoming more and more derogatory towards women. The sad part is that not only male singers but female singers thrive in using derogatory lyrics towards women too :(
